Fun with Sin City Stamps and Primary Elements

Hey there!  I hope everyone is enjoying the warmer weather, but where did May go?  Hmmm... it sure does fly by faster and faster.  But today I have a fun, steampunkish, tag tutorial I want to share.  I am using a new (to me) stamp set that I just got from Sin City Stamps using one of my favorite images, hot air balloons.  I have prepared a video tutorial to show you all the fun you can have using all of these products together.  So let's get started.

Sin City Stamps Design Team Application

Hello everyone, and Happy Father's Day to all those special men out there today.  I hope everyone is enjoying a peaceful Sunday with their families!

Well, it's that time of year again, and I am applying for the Sin City Stamps Design Team once more.  I hope you will leave me a nice comment below and let me know you were here.

As promised in my previous post, I want to continue with my Wizard of Oz chipboard book, stencils and die cuts from Sin City Stamps.  Eighteen new stamps sets have been released this week, three of which are Wizard of Oz themed.  Since I have not received them yet, I want to share more techniques with you about how to use the stencils and die cuts in your chipboard book.

The Scarecrow

Place stencil onto your background page and mark around the scarecrow's face with pencil.

Color in face with Yellow Ochre acrylic paint.  Let paint dry.

Realign stencil and apply more paint on his hands, sleeves, and collar.

Finish painting your scarecrow with red (hat), clover mixed with burnt umber (shirt, pants), burnt umber (boots, facial features).  So here he is, my cute little scarecrow.  Now, I am going to give him his outline with the outline die.

Simply adhere the outline die over your stenciled image, and voila!!!  Don't forget to cut away his face area.

I went back with a tiny brush and added some shading.  Here is a closeup.  Isn't he adorable?

Next, paint the "Brain" chipboard piece with red on the word, and copper on the gears, and dry brush the edge of the letters with copper.

Before adhering to my page, I added one of my metal gears I had in my stash.  And here it is, my almost completed page.  I've left lots of room in my mini book for stamping those fabulous images in the newly released Wizard of Oz stamps sets.

The Tin Man

This stencil lends itself perfectly to doing a bit of paper piecing.  I first chose a silver metallic paper.  I want my tin man to face right, so on the reverse side of my silver paper, I placed him facing left and outlined with a pencil.  My outline looks something like this.

Cut around him loosely because the outline die cut will cover those areas.  My pencil lines will not be seen as they are on the reverse.

Before adhering my die cut to my silver sheet, I like to dry fit it to see if I need to remove any extra bits that are exposed.  Then I glue the two pieces together.  Well, here he is, but wait, his axe is empty. You could either do a bit more paper piecing, or what I did in my next step.

I simply placed the stencil onto my page, adding paint through the axe portion only, i.e., burnt umber for the axe handle and copper with gold for the blade.  Then I matched up my die cut with the paint and adhered him to the page.

I painted the chipboard heart with a mixture of engine red and burnt umber, and the word "Heart" with sunflower.  I distressed the word with some brown ink.  Again, I found a metal heart charm that I adhered to the chipboard.  Awesome!

The Cowardly Lion

This time, I removed the lion's face and body portions of the die cut image, leaving only his mane intact.  I taped the die cut down so it would not move and covered it with the stencil, painting sunflower  mixed with a tiny bit of burnt umber onto the die cut.

Then I lightly stippled a mixture of the sunflower and more burnt umber around the edges to give a bit of dimension.

I used the paper piecing technique to add a solid sheet of tan card stock inside the die cut image and adhered them together, as before.  I painted the Courage chipboard with a mixture of clover and sunflower paint, giving a dry-brushed edge with just the sunflower.  And here is the almost-finished page.  Again, I am saving lots of room for photographs, phrases, quotes, etc., and those fabulous Wizard of Oz stamp sets that I have on order.

Butterfly Mini Book

Hello everyone!  So glad you stopped by today.  I have a super fun project to share using some of the newest products from Sin City Stamps, and my favorite technique I learned from Finnabair, aka Anna Dabrowski.  As you will see, this technique allows you to use whatever supplies you have on hand, whether or not the colors match.

Supplies Used:

Sin City Stamps:  Butterfly Chipboard Book, Gears Die Cuts, Gears 3 Die Cuts, Animal Print Stencil
Love of Butterflies, Art Journaling with Terri Sproul 2,
Paper flowers and embellishments (Recollections, Prima)
Metal gears (Tim Holtz)
Ink Sprays:  Seven Seas, Chocolate Covered Cherries (Tattered Angels); Cut Grass, Funky Fuchsia (Dylusions)
Ink Pads:  Encore Gold Metallic, Versafine Smokey Gray, Vintage Photo distress,
Metallic Creams:  German Silver (Baroque Art); Olive, Gold, Copper, Black (Craf-T Products)
Glue n Seal (Ranger)
Hard Molding Paste (Golden)
White Gesso (Ranger)

Directions:

Front Cover:

First of all, I want to show you the quality of these laser cut wood book covers.  These are the most sturdy substrates, and you will be able to embellish these with heavy-duty embellishments without losing stability.

Adhere die cut gears and clock hands with glue n seal to front cover.

Apply hard molding paste through animal print stencil and let dry.

Adhere flowers and metal embellishments, as shown, and paint everything with white gesso, let dry.

Spray cover with ink sprays, dabbing some of the colors off, and re-spraying until you like it.

Blend colors a bit with a damp paintbrush and dab off more with a paper towel.

Apply metallic creams to the die cut gears, flowers, and metal embellishments (gold), clock hands (green metallic), stenciled areas (black and gold metallic) and add some gold metallic around the edges.

Cover metal filigree butterfly with German silver metallic cream and adhere to cover, as shown.  Lift wings a bit for dimension.

Glue chain and metal hanger to center of butterfly, as shown.  Add small metal clock face, lightly inked with brown archival ink, and tiny pearl to center of clock hands.

Here are a few more close-ups of the front cover embellishments.

Inside Front Cover:

Stamp large butterfly onto die cut butterfly book page with grey ink.

Color with colored pencils, distress ink, and add a bit of clear Wink of Stella pen to white flower petals and butterflies.

Stamp small swirl design around the edge of the paper with Encore gold metallic ink.  Adhere to inside front cover.

Back Cover:

Adhere ribbon, lace, die cut gears, paper flowers, leaves, and metal embellishments to cover with Glue n Seal.  Let dry.  Trim excess lace and ribbon.

Paint entire piece with white gesso and let dry.

Spray cover with ink sprays, dabbing some of the colors off, and re-spraying until you like it.  Blend colors a bit with a damp paintbrush and dab off more with a paper towel.

Apply metallic creams to the die cut gears, flowers, and metal embellishments (gold), clock hands (green metallic), stenciled areas (black and gold metallic) and add some gold metallic around the edges.

Inside Back Cover:

Paint inside back cover with white gesso while adhering die cut gears.  Allow to dry.

Spray cover with ink sprays, dabbing some of the colors off, and re-spraying until you like it.  Blend colors a bit with a damp paintbrush and dab off more with a paper towel.  Apply metallic creams to the die cut gears.

Add a few metal gears and clock face with brad over die cuts, as shown.

Here you can see the back (left) and the front (right) side by side.  There are several die cut pages inserted in the middle to be decorated as you choose.

Blooming Daffodils Card

Hello Robin's Nest fans, and welcome back.  I hope everyone had a wonderful and blessed Easter holiday.  For my first project of the month, I made this  beautiful card for Spring using the gorgeous Glitter Sorbet Collection card stock from The Robin's Nest.  I am in love with this paper collection.  The colors are absolutely gorgeous with glittery swashes across the front, and the reverse side is a complimentary color without glitter, perfect for card making.

1.  Cut 12"x12" Aquamarine Glitter Sorbet card stock in half to 6"x12".
2.  Place short edge of card stock along the ornate edge die and cut out.

3.  Cut a second piece of card stock 1-1/2" x 6" and die cut this piece using the same die.

TIP:  To help you see where to place your card stock on these edge dies, draw straight lines with a white pen and mark the center of the die.  This will help you make straight cuts.  

 

4.  Fold card in half with glittered side out.  Adhere reverse side of second die cut along front edge, as shown.

The edge made by the second die cut gives you a horizon line to place your daffodils, so they are not floating in the air.

5.  Punch multiples of the daffodil punch in both green scrap card stock (3 complete) and Kiwi glitter sorbet card stock (12 flower heads).

Cut three complete green daffodils

Cut the two flower heads six times for total of twelve

6.  Adhere the first daffodil image in the center, and continue adhering the remaining two on either side.

7.  Snip off the excess stem from each Kiwi flower head and adhere them to each of the green images, as shown.

8.  If you have been following me, you know by now that I am a glutton for dimension.  Dry emboss the remaining six flower heads using a large ball stylus tool and a piece of fun foam.  If you do this from the reverse, you will "cup" the flower.   Turn it back over to the front and gently push the center back down.  This will give you a nice form to your flower.

9.  Put a small bead of white glue in the center of each flower, and using a pair of tweezers, lay the embossed flower on top, a bit offset from the bottom one.  This gives the appearance of more petals.

10.  Allow to dry, then glue tiny orange neon dew drops to the flower centers.  Isn't that pretty?

I also glued a few pink and purple neon mini dew drops to the bottom of the card front.

11.  Cut out just the word "BLOOM" from the Core-dinations Seasonal embossed card stock.

12.  Sand the letters,  and distress with peeled paint.

13.  Die cut another piece of Aquamarine Glitter Sorbet card stock using the Fancy Tags 2 die cut and distress edges with peeled paint.  Adhere to card, as shown.

14.  Adhere "BLOOM" over Fancy Tag with foam tape.

15.  One last thing to do was punch a beautiful pink butterfly from the pink sorbet card stock, adhering only the body of the butterfly and allowing the wings to remain free.
