How to Use Packaging to Make Beautiful Mixed Media Tags with ColourArte

Have you ever bought something that had pretty packaging?  Manufacturers spend lots of money on their packaging to make us want to buy their product.  Well, sometimes I just cannot bear to throw the cardboard backing or actual tag on a product.  Why not put these to use and turn them into beautiful mixed media tags to use in your art, whether it's for a card front, an addition to your art journal,  an embellishment for a canvas, a gift tag, or just to try out different mixed media techniques to keep for future reference!

I hope you can take a moment to check out my video tutorial below and perhaps fill your mind with ideas.

How to Make Molded Embellishments Continued: Reveal Molded Pieces

Hi everyone.  Barbara  here again with a quick continuation of my previous video about making molded pieces with ColourArte Vivid Ultra Metallics and Radiant Gels.

I left off with this mold containing Pink Azalea Vivid, but it wasn't dry enough for me to remove it to show you how pretty it is and all the details it captures.  So, it is a few days later now and, as I promised, here is a quick reveal of it and how it looks coming out of the mold.

A couple of still photo close-ups for you.  As you can see, all of the detail is captured in the paint.  And the really cool thing about these are that they are very flexible, unlike some paper and polymer clays that become very stiff when dry.  Then there is plaster, which will not bend at all.  These have the flexibility to wrap around jars, ornaments, bowls, glasses, tin cans, you name it.

And this is one of the three that I first dusted inside the mold with Primary Elements Gold Nugget before pouring the Vivid paint into it.  It left this beautiful highlight and even better, the Primary Elements pigment will not rub off.  Another plus, I think.

ColourArt Supplies Used:
Vivid Ultra Metallics
  Pink Azalea
  Olive Vine
  Periwinkle
  Emperor's Gold
  Coral Berry
Primary Elements
  Golden Nugget

Other Products Used:

Silicone Molds
Spatula

Part Two - Finishing Acrylic Poured Canvas with ColourArte

Hi everyone.  Today I am sharing the second part of my acrylic poured canvas video tutorial in which I did a lot of manipulating and experimenting with pouring products and, of course, ColourArte.  You can CLICK HERE to see that first video.

The canvas has completely dried since taping of that video, and here are photos of how it looks now.

Although I did not get very many cells in this pour, I still thought it was pretty, but not quite pretty enough to stand on its own as a piece of abstract art.  So, I decided to use it as my background for an assemblage piece.  In the second part of this project video tutorial, I will show you how I finished the piece and hopefully saved it from trash can.  I hope you will gain some inspiration from my second part of this video tutorial here.

Mixed Media Cards: Four Backgrounds with ColourArte

Hello friends!  Barbara here.  It's my turn to do a ColourArte blog post today. You will usually find me over on the Video Creators side, but every now and then, I fill in on the blog side.

I have some good news to share.  ColourArte has introduced a new medium called The Solution Acrylic Medium Wash.  It is basically a binder without any thickening agent added. What does that mean?  First and foremost, you can use it to make watercolors and fluid acrylics that won't rub off using the Primary Elements Artist Pigment powders.  You can also make custom color sprays with it.   There are so many possibiities with this product, and I am going to share a few of the things you can do with it in any and all of your mixed media art.

I am especially excited for my fellow card makers. Not everyone wants to paint on a canvas, so I am going to show you some more fun, beautiful backgrounds to make for your cards using plain old brown paper bag.  You can also substitute kraft card stock, too.  So let's play!

Here are the four backgrounds we are going to make.  They will not only work for card backgrounds, but think of the possibilities... art journals, canvases, fabric, and whatever else you can think of.  Take these ideas and run with them.

And here are the four cards I made using these backgrounds.

Card 1:  Tear brown paper bags into rectangles about the size of an A2 card (4-1/4" x 5-1/2").

Stamp script background with Versamark ink, heat emboss with white embossing powder.

Paint paper with The Solution + Bolivian Blue

Embellish with Kanban Mare Blu Paper Craft Toppers using pop dots

Card 2:  Emboss one of the paper bag rectangles with an embossing folder.

Sizzix Tropical Paisley embossing folder

Use a brayer to pick up Emperor's Gold Radiant Gel and run the brayer over the high spots.

Paint the paper with The Solution + China Black PE

Sizzix/Tim Holtz Frameworks die - Honeycomb
Paint Emperor's Gold Radiant Gel directly onto three chipboard pieces

Edge chipboard pieces with Black Faber-Castell Pitt Artist Pen

Black card stock layers
Scrap-Mart Exclusive Labels die (beneath flower oval)
Kanban Always and Forever Yellow Roses Paper Craft Toppers

Use honeycomb chipboard die cut to place/glue honeycomb pieces onto card front.

Kanban Always and Forever Yellow Roses Paper Craft Toppers adhered with pop dots.

Card 3:  Painted paper bag paper, stamped script with black archival ink.

The Solution + Bronze Medallion PE

Paint paper bag rectangle with The Solution + Bronze Medallion PE
Stamp script with black archival ink

Match colors in Belle Epoque Violet Paper Craft Toppers
Mix The Solution + Ginger Flower + Sapphire On Ice
Paint chevron die cut

Kanban Belle Epoque Violet Paper Craft Toppers adhered with pop dots
Sizzix/Tim Holtz Frameworks die - Chevron

Card 4:  Radiant Gel spead through stencil.

3D Gloss Gel + Bronze Medallion PE through Prima daises stencil

Remove stencil and clean medium off of stencil right away

3D Gloss Gel dries clear, allowing the beautiful shimmer from the PE to shine through.

Paint paper with The Solution + Ginger Flower PE

Adhere Kanban Mannequin (Ruby) Paper Craft Topers with pop dots

Supplies used:

The Solution Acrylic Wash Medium

Primary Elements Artist Pigment

Bolivian Blue
Ginger Flower
Sapphire on Ice
Bronze Medallion

Radiant Gels:

Emperor's Gold

Other Supplies used:

Penny Black Letter Background rubber stamp
Prima Daisies stencil (6x6)
Sizzix Tropical Paisley embossing folder
Sizzix/Tim Holtz Frameworks die - Honeycomb

Scrap-Mart Exclusive Labels die
Black Faber-Castell Pitt Artist Pen

So, there you have it... four different backgrounds using a simple brown paper bag.  I hope you enjoyed my card projects today and perhaps, I inspired you to play with your pigment powders for a variety of uses.

Thanks for stopping by, and have a wonderful, creative weekend!

Mixed Media Tag: Authentic

Hey there, ColourArte-ists!  I have a summery tag to share today.  I suppose it is my one last attempt at hanging on to the the warm weather.  In spite of the fact that I love Fall, I love that period of time just before the chill in the air hits.  I just received this beautiful stamp for my birthday and the amazing water droplets stamp from Designs by Ryn in my design team package, and I could not wait to use them with my beautiful ColourArte Silks Acrylic Glazes.  A very dear friend and talented artist, Pam Bray, gave me a quick lesson on side-loading a paint brush, so here is my feeble, but not too bad, attempt at shading.

Directions:

Stamp Divine flower stamp onto a piece of 4" x 9" acrylic paper with VersaFine Onyx Black ink, let dry thoroughly.
Using a damp brush, pick up Apricot Nectar Silks and color in both the flowers and buds.  Add shading with a side-loading brush technique, using more water for a lighter color, and less water for a deeper color.   As you can see in the photo below, one color was used on all flowers, but color variations were obtained with the amount of water added.
To obtain depth and dimension, side load a damp brush with Ginger Flower Silks and deepen the edges of the petals where they would be darkest, blending into the flower petals.
Using a small liner brush, color the stems with Moss Green Silks.
Stamp the image onto scrap paper or post it notes, cut out to use as a mask.   Cover each flower petal and bud.
Spread light molding paste through the grungy numbers stencil with a spatula.  Let dry.
Stamp Water Droplets with VersaFine Onyx Black ink and let dry.
To color the background, I used the 1/2" angle shader brush, mixed a dollop of each color with water onto my craft sheet, and spread over the entire background.  Silks Celedon, Carribean Mist, and Wisteria were used.  I kept the blue of the Carribean Mist where the water droplets were stamped.
When I got nearer to the flower petals and buds, I brushed the color away from the masks so that I did not get paint underneath them.
The masks protected my painted flowers and petals, as you can see below when I remove the post-it notes.
To add a bit of sparkle to the stenciled numbers, I re-aligned the stencil over them and brushed on Emperor's Gold Radiant Gels.
As you can see below, the effect is subtle but effective.  Unfortunately, it is very hard to pick up the beautiful shimmer with a camera.  It looks amazing in person.
I used a white gel pen to highlight the water droplets.
A tiny dot at the top and a short line at the bottom of the droplet did the trick.  See close-up below.
Cut a giant sized tag (5-1/2" x 1-1/2") from a piece of print paper from the DCWV paper stack.

Adhere acrylic paper to 4-1/4" x 9-1/4" black card stock.
Mix Silks Clear Medium with Primary Elements China Black and cover metal word band.  Shhh, don't tell anyone, but I just dipped my finger into the glaze, then into the Primary Elements and rubbed it over the word band.  It mixed beautifully, and all I needed was a small amount.
Let dry and sand off some of the black paint with fine sandpaper.
Insert twine through word band holes and wrap around to back.
Turn layer over, run a thin line of Beacon 3-in-1 glue along right edge and add lace.  When you turn it back over, the lace will actually be on the left.
Adhere layer to tag base, add metal watering can embellishment and black alphabet stickers to spell "Divine".

Cut two lengths of ribbon approximately 8" long and thread through tag hole.
